“The
scholarship awarded by Good Samaritans represented a new beginning in my
life. As a single mother of two, a college degree was only a dream.
However, with the assistance of Good Samaritans my dream became a reality.
I have graduated from Roane State Community College with high honors in
less than two years. I have an Associates Degree in Health and Science. I
currently am attending Tennessee Tech University to complete my Bachelors
Degree in Health and Physical Education. Thank you Good Samaritans for
making my dream of a college degree a reality.”

“The
Soft Skills classes held at Good Samaritans gave me the opportunity to
update my skills with the current programs used in an office environment. I
had graduated from college a number of years ago and the programs used in
today’s offices are not what I had been taught. When searching for a new
job, I discovered that some potential employers were looking for a more
"formal" education in these programs. Good Samaritans offered that chance
with their Soft Skills class. The instructor, Carol Price, structures the
classroom as if it were a job. The student becomes the employee. The
student is expected to report to class as scheduled and complete assigned
tasks within a given time frame, just as if they were reporting to a job.
When going into a work environment, the student is prepared for what an
employer would be expecting of them.”

“During
the time I was without a job I attended the Soft Skills class,
instructed by Carol Price. During my short stay at this class, I had a
sense of responsibility, having to attend class and do work. While
attending I went over basic working manners and responsibilities. This
enhanced my sense of duties and manners for a job. I am thankful to the
class for reassuring job skills within me.”
Rose Bradford
Rose
Bradford is in our
Families First
program, a state program for people who are unemployed and receiving a
monthly check from DHS (Tenn. Dept. of Human
Services ). She started classes at
Good Samaritans in September of 2005. At the time she was only 20 years old
and the single parent of a son. She lived out on her own with no support
group. She was estranged from her mother and her father was in Iraq. He
recently came home but is supposed to be going back. After being in our
classes for a few weeks, Rose got a part-time job at Ryan's and also started
a night class at Tennessee Technology Center in Medical Billing. During the
next few weeks Rose continued to work and attend class. She did very well
and maintained an A average. The job at Ryan's however was not working out
very well. She liked what she did but was not getting enough hours to pay
the bills. We suggested that she apply at Lowe's. They pay well and will
work around a school schedule. She applied and with the help of our job
developer was given a job. Rose finished her class in March and is currently
still working at Lowe's. She absolutely loves her job and is getting close
to 40 hours a week. She still hopes to obtain a job in the Medical field,
but is content with working at Lowe's until this happens.
