Success:
Josh & Candice Brown

Made a Difference to That One!
Spring, 2006
Summary:
Josh and Candice Brown found new careers when their new-born baby was in
intensive care. Cumberland Good Samaritans was able to help with scholarships
and financial assistance through Direct Services and the Client Barrier Fund.
Where
were you when opportunity knocked? Can you imagine being in the neonatal
intensive care waiting room anxiously waiting to see your newborn son when
opportunity presents itself? Probably not, but that is where Josh and
Candice Brown were.
Josh
and Candice's baby was born in 2002 with a life-threatening birth defect.
While at the hospital, Josh met a Cumberland County deputy who suggested he
apply for a job with the department. Josh had always dreamed of a career in
law enforcement and the dream soon came true. He was hired as a deputy and
received the John R. Cunningham Award for Outstanding Officer while at the
police academy. He was also attending Tennessee Technology University
full-time.
Candice
found her career calling during this time of watching the nurses care for
her baby. As soon as she could, she enrolled in Roane State Community
College. She was accepted into the RN program and worked as an extern for
Cumberland Medical Center. Quite a schedule for a new mom!
Cumberland Good Samaritans was an invaluable help in all
of this. The CGS scholarship program assisted with unmet educational needs.
The CGS Client Barrier Fund was able to provide necessary equipment for
their jobs. Direct Services was able to help meet some financial needs at
home, starting while both were out of work while the baby was in intensive
care. Most of all, there were countless prayers offered up by the staff and
volunteers.
The success and blessings continue with this family. Josh
has since been hired as a TN State Trooper and was named president of his
class at the trooper academy. He was also named top of this class by
excelling in all areas and was rewarded with a brand new patrol car.
Candice is employed by a local hospital in their new community and is
working in pediatrics. Both are continuing their education. Their son
Joshua is the achievement they are most proud of. He is thriving in the new
home and has made a complete recovery.
CGS helped to make a difference in the life of this
family. Opportunity knocked on our door too, and we were able to give a
helping hand up to a police officer, nurse, mommy, daddy, and a beautiful
baby boy.
