Removing Barriers to Success
With a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

Within our Social Services Department, we recognize the individual and sometimes unique needs of each client. Through our ever-evolving programs and partnerships with other agencies, such as the Tennessee Department of Human ServicesIcon: Offsite and Families FirstIcon: Offsite, barriers are identified and addressed so that lives and futures might be changed for the better.  All clients are given the opportunity to work to overcome the issues that are keeping them from being self-supporting and to put them on the road to success, including issues like disabilities, low-skills, and just needing a job or a better education.

  • Assessment Program:  What are the barriers to self-sufficiency? We have testing, evaluation, and career counseling for clients to assist in identifying and dealing with barriers to self-sufficiency.
  • Soft Skills - Clients can learn or improve computer skills in our own computer lab.
  • Job Training and Job Placement  - We partner with local employers to improve job opportunities and break the cycle of dependency.
  • Work Adjustment - We assist clients with job placement including readiness skills, provision of a job coach for a limited time to learn job duties, follow-up and post-employment services.
  • Scholarship Program  - We partner with Roane State Community College, Tennessee Technology Center - Crossville, and Adult Education to pay for tuition and books for low income individuals, with special emphasis on recent high school graduates and those not qualified for other financial aid programs.
  • Assistance with self-help - All clients are given the opportunity to participate in career counseling, budget counseling, guidance, work adjustment and job placement assistance.

All of these programs give incentive, encouragement, and hope to those trying to improve circumstances and lifestyles.

From the Families First web page:

Families First is Tennessee's welfare reform plan which replaced the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program. The temporary cash assistance program emphasizes work, training, and personal responsibility. As part of the Families First program, each participant must agree to follow a Personal Responsibility Plan (PRP).

Unless a participant is exempt from the work requirement, he/she must also agree to develop, follow, and complete a work plan. The work plan is based on the individuals needs and skills.

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Matthew 25:40
