Direct
Services: Food Pantry

Our food pantry is an important source of groceries for many.
Our pantry
also supplies our Senior Food Give-Away Program. We purchase a trailer
load of food from Second Harvest of East Tennessee each month to distribute to needy
senior citizens.
CGS also
shares food with the local Bread of Life Emergency Shelter.
Our Pantry Partners: We are a member of
Second Harvest
Food Bank of East Tennessee , where
we can buy in bulk for a minimal charge per pound.
Food City
is a partner with the Senior Food Give-Away and helps with the purchase and
distribution of Second Harvest food.
Food, breads, and sweets from
Kroger
are distributed on a daily basis through the Food Pantry.
Local food drives generously supply additional food.
Our Pantry Volunteers: Log in food,
update files, fill food baskets and stock shelves.
Food Drives:
-
TAD
(Teens Against Drugs) sponsors an annual skating event in
November.
Admission for the event is canned goods for the CGS food pantry. Close to a
thousand cans are usually collected and used to "make a difference" during the
winter months.
-
The US Postal Service sponsors an annual food drive each May
collecting cans from postal patrons all over the county and delivering the
food to local pantries. This food drive allows Good Samaritans to “make a
difference” for families with children out of school for the summer. During
the school year many of
these children are fed twice daily through the free meals program at school.
This can place a real burden on families during the summer months.
-
Local Boy Scouts hold food drives to
help restock the pantry shelves.
-
Schools
and classrooms often collect cans for our pantry.
